When not reliable, good HP service. September 3, 2010 Danny I purchased this unit as a replacement to another economical printer that took a dive. It is sleek to look at, if not a little bulky. The paper tray cover which serves as the output tray is not fixed, and I wish it were so. My 3yo got hold of it, dropped it, and the extension broke off.
Aside from that, no issues for about nine months until the paper stopped feeding. The rollers would go, but the initial rollers wouldn't even touch down on the paper. After a few seconds of NOT feeding, a loud clicking noise occurred, and then the orange "something's wrong!" light started flashing.
I called HP Australia, and after verifying that I still had 72 days of warranty left, they considered my verbal testimonial and said that a courier would arrive next week to collect it, and drop off a brand new one, with an extra three months warranty. Quick, easy. I wish the unit were still working, but I loved the service when it didn't.
Functional workhorse August 28, 2010 MdniteEagl (Mt. Arlington, New Jersey United States) Recently purchased a new computer with Windows 7 Professional, and discovered that, while my HP Deskjet 6940dt had a built-in driver, HP did not support any of the additional features in Windows 7... particularly the second tray and automatic duplexer - things I use regularly and the main reasons I had purchased that printer over 2 years ago for my home office.
So I had to make a decision about whether or not to live without those features or buy a new printer that was supported fully in Windows 7. I had been reading reviews about the Officejet Pro 8000 with some trepidation... some people liked it, some hated it. But in reviewing the HP support site, I noticed two things - they offer the full software package for Windows 7, and there was a firmware update to address the paper feeding issues that many people had reported. Plus, it offered an optional second tray. So I pulled the trigger.
Was on sale at Staples for just $69.99... irony here is that the second paper tray was $79.99, and the replacement print heads are $59.99 each (there are two in the printer). Almost makes the printer disposable if something goes wrong; just keep the second tray and get a new printer (which includes ink and print heads) for less. Not a great value in terms of maintenance, but I'll worry about that much later.
As usual, it set up within minutes. Instead of using the disc that was included, I downloaded the software package from the HP support site - files there are often newer than what's burned on the discs. HP tells you up front that the initialization takes about 20 minutes, and it took about that much time, but not a problem. Once it's on, initialized, and has run a few jobs, just leave it alone. It will go into sleep mode on very low power which greatly reduces lag time when you do send it something to print. Some complain that it's a noisy printer when operating, but I didn't find much audible difference between this and the 6940... doesn't bother me while I'm working. Print speed is what I've come to expect from HP (this being my 4th straight HP printer at home), and the ink cartridges should last much longer with the 8000... the 940XL black cartridge is rated for an average of 2200 pages - the 96 black cartridge for the 6940 was rated at less than 900 pages and I was replacing it about every 5 months.
I have yet to have a paper feed issue, so the new firmware has likely addressed the problem. For those still experiencing it, go to the HP support site and follow the instructions to see which firmware version you have. If you qualify for the firmware update, you simply download the file and follow the installation instrux.
One thing to note for prospective buyers, this printer takes up a notable footprint. Not a problem for me at my home office desk, as the printer resides up high and off the desk surface, but if you have a smaller desk, you may want to consider a printer stand or some other piece of sturdy furniture that can keep the 8000 from taking up space on the desk.
So far, so good. The Officejet Pro 8000 is not perfect - that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 - but it is actually going to serve me better than the 6940 for how I use it.
As expected from HP August 21, 2010 danno101 (Out in the sun) Contrary to other reviews here, setup was a breeze. I allowed WinXP to install the device rather than use the softwsre CD. Print quality is not photo worthy but it is good for documents and such. Physical size is a bit larger than I expected as it has the protruding tractor feed on the rear. This is necessary for 2 sided printing. Separate color ink cartridges cause the unit to have a wide footprint. As expected with almost all HP printers, they have engineered their ink cartridges to be one use (non-refillable) only by virtue of a microchip which is not resettable. This forces user to buy overpriced HP ink. Spool-up time for the printer is longer than most. There seems to a lot of monkey motion going on to initiate unit even though the printer is left in standby mode. Once spooled up the printer performs well.

I bought this last week, received it yesterday via UPS. Delivery time seemed longer than I'd expected, but not out of line. The box itself was larger than I'd expected as well, given the size of my last HP desktop printer. Set up was easy enough, though the size of the printer was a bit of a challenge since it wouldn't fit where I'd intended to locate it. I juggled a few things in the office, though, and it hooked up easily enough. Software installation went without a hitch as well, and it is now up and running. The printer required about ten minutes to get through the print head alignment, test page stage of things, and seemed very noisy throughout. The cautionary note on the first sheet printed said it wasn't unusual to hear "clicks" during this stage, but it did not warn of the whirling, print head sliding from side to side, etc. Once that was all taken care of, it ran the sample page at the punch of a button and has been fine since then. If it operates as smoothly as the other HPs I've owned, I don't expect there to be any difficulties. I will add to this review if I find I'm disappointed down the line, but so far so good.
Don't Buy this Printer June 27, 2010 W. Eichinger 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this printer 6 months ago. It has worked ok. My biggest complaint is that the print quality wasn't up to that of most of the printers that I have owned.
Today, I go to use it, and the entire contents of all four print cartridges is spread over the inside of the printer. It is a sticky, colorful mess. Even if I could get it all apart, is it even cleanable? It is definitely gummed up. Worse yet, looking around on line (I got a manual only for the wireless installation, not the printer itself), this has happened to others. Hp's answer seemed to be look in the manual for help. Not acceptable.
I can't recommend this printer. Even if this had not happened, the print quality isn't there.
