Mine broke after two weeks - need I say more? August 30, 2010 Kyle T. Logan I really liked this printer. When it worked for the two weeks I had it. It broke on day 15. When I went online to troubleshoot, it seemed like many people had issues with the 8500 model, particularly the wireless version. But since this one was only the ethernet version, I hoped that tech support could resolve. Alas, after 45 minutes of troubleshooting with India, they declared it dead and in need of physical inspection and repair. Needless to say, I bought another model and brand after this experience. Buyer beware. I hope you get a good one if you go for this model. Like I said, when it worked, I loved it.
HP 8500 is So-So August 29, 2010 Michael W. Gardner 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not a bad printer. The paper transport mechanism is rather noisy. The print quality is OK. Nothing great, but OK. This printer, like all HP printers, DRINKS ink. It is rather slow compared to other printers I have owned. I purchased an optional paper tray for this printer, tray #2, and have yet to get the printer to pick up paper from the second tray. I have gone through the troubleshooting steps listed on the HP web site, including upgrading the firmware on the printer to no avail. It absolutely refuses to pick up paper from the second paper tray. Also, it will tell you, via the LCD readout, the printer is out of paper and will quit printing when there is paper left in the main paper tray. This is a pretty good sized printer. The procedure for installing the second paper tray is to position the second paper tray on the surface the printer is going to occupy, then pick up the printer and set it on top of the paper tray. This can be very clumsy if the printer is going to be in a tight spot. I have owned several HP printers. In fact, this is the fourth one I own at the present time. This is by far the worst HP printer I have owned. Two stars is being generous.
It's like a fidgety kid, or a possessed demon August 23, 2010 Derek G (Redneck, South Carolina) I've owned this printer for 1-2 years and I must say the first year it worked great. The software is really bloated, though. Last driver to load during bootup and 3 or 4 programs stay resident in memory. I used to love the included "Smart Web Printing" which allowed us to copy and print only the sections of a website we wanted. Suddenly HP stopped updating it for 3.x versions of Firefox. Now the only supported browser is MSIE which of course no one uses.
This is the noisiest printer I think I have ever owned in 20 years. The printing itself is quick and fast and the quality is great for everyday printing. It's after the printing that the printer chugs and clunks around. Cleaning is the worst as it takes 3-5 minutes and it decides when to start, not me. Sometimes it'll start rattling in the middle of the night like it was possessed. It even moves the desk around from all the shaking. I need an exorcist.
Now that I'm into my second year of use, these annoying cleaning cycles have been happening very frequently. I can print a single page and here comes an additional five minutes of noise. I want to stuff it in the closet. I hope this isn't an indication it's going to break soon. One more gripe, another second year issue is it has been sucking up an extra sheet of paper during it's post-printing chugathon. It loads it as if to print a page, then simply stops. Next time I print I have to wait for it to spit out this blank loaded sheet before it continues.
Cartidges are easy to get to and change. Don't even need to open it up, just flip open a side panel on the front. You MUST get the 940XL cartridges instead of the regular unless you want to get ripped off. At Amazon prices of $30+ for black and $20+ for three colors it's a heavy price but I only have had to replace them once a year. That gets me about 1000 pages, maybe 300 were double sided so probably 1300 pages a year or 7.7 cents per page; a far cry from the 1.2 cents Consumer Reports said it would cost for black text. All the money you're paying is going toward microchips on the cartridges to keep the off-brand ink sellers from entering the market. Sad.
I dig the "myprintmileage" feature which shows us the grand total of everything it has printed. Why I have to connect to the HP site to get this information is beyond me. I find photo printing to be annoying, difficult, and wasteful as they never seem to print exactly where you want the images to show up. I've given up trying. Regular text and color printing does look nice, though. Avery forms seem to match up good (i.e. shipping labels for Ebay). PDF too. Compact media like Sandisk transfers easily using Windows.
I'm torn whether I would or would not recommend this to someone else. Leaning toward no due to all of it's idiosyncrasies.
terrible...do not buy! August 11, 2010 gopher13 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have struggled with an "out of paper" message at least 50% of the time I try to print...and it's not out of paper. I don't have the time to continue to deal with HP poor customer service. Avoid this product!
The ink is a rip off July 27, 2010 shooter2 If they gave you the printer would still be stuck with ink cartridges that cost nearly $20 each or more. The last three I got directly from HP were empty. I tired to contact them to complain, it cannot be done. I recently dumped my HP computer and went to an iMac 27 and am delighted. Next on my list is to get rid of the 8500. This is a POS and so is their customer service. S2
