Do not purchase this printer. August 30, 2010 Peeved customer (Illinois) First, setting this printer up is difficult. The third or fourth time you call customer service you will probably find someone who can tell you what no other person before them did, but with a snide and condescending tone that you don't need in your life. Setting it up to run in wireless mode is especially challenging.
Second, the daily use directions are woefully inadequate. Try to find out what a blinking power light means. You can't. the printer just doesn't work.
Third, this printer grinds away for minutes at a time, making all sorts of strange noises, but not printing. You'll spend more time standing around wondering if your printer will work or if it's malfunctioned again. And then you'll get something useless like a "Wireless Network Test Report" that tells you everything is fine. But your printer still isn't printing.
Fourth, the printer jams all the time. How a printer in the 21st century can regularly jam paper in such a way that the printer carriage can't move is beyond me. Fortunately, it is NOT beyond the capability of other companies that make printers. This is my last HP printer ever!!!!!
Breaks, then HP won't stand behind their product August 21, 2010 SECPerks (Nashville, TN) After only a few months, the print head got jammed and the printer quit working. I called technical support, and they informed me they wouldn't help me because I was "out of warranty." But it was only a few months into the 1-year period. Thankfully, I kept the receipt, and after weeks of fighting HP acknowledged that they owed me a replacement. Unfortunately, they sent me the cheaper version that wasn't a wireless printer. When I called to point out the switch, HP told me they would not replace it with a wireless model because the latest version was more expensive than the one I had purchased. They wouldn't give me a full or even partial refund either. So after hours on the phone and weeks of fighting, I'm stuck with a printer I don't want because it's not wireless. I will never ever buy an HP product again. Not only do their products break easily, but their "customer service" is a nightmare.
Good Printer - For limited Time August 10, 2010 HuggamuggaMAX (Charlotte, NC) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use this in a busy chiropractic office for occasional color printing and as a backup for our MFC Samsung SCX-4725FN B&W laser printer. This prints fast, very fast. Easy set up. Wireless is convenient and easy (even as a Mac OSX user). HP has cornered the ink market (remanufactured cartridges are incompatible), but the ink cost is not unreasonable (advertised as cheaper than laser, which drew me to it). The print quality is great, and each ink cartridge stretches quite far. Duplex is a plus. The paper tray is quite flimsy and breaks easy. It did the job well when it worked
The problem: I've had to replace the printer just shortly after a year. Thank God for the store warranty from Staples. I've had to send it back to HP 2 times because of faulty electronic sensors where the paper tray sits. There is no RESET button on the printer itself due to the absence of a LCD user interface. Yes, it is a cheap and reasonable buy, but the inconvenience of the printer crashing unpredictably makes me want to find a stand alone color laser printer instead. I'd pay a little bit extra for the initial cost to ensure reliability
When it comes to printing...you do not want HP... July 27, 2010 Marcus Perry 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
i bought this printer to replace another hp photosmart all-in-one that i owned about a year ago. the photosmart stopped printing correctly so i replaced it with this one because i could get it on sale. NEVER again will i go with HP.
i've had problems intermittently with wireless connectivity and "paper jams/out of paper" (it really isn't jamming or out of paper) errors. both errors were happening a few months after i got it, but seemed to right themselves for a while.
the connectivity seems to be doing fine now, but for a while, every time i would try to print, it would tell me "printer busy" or "error: connection timed out...attempting to reconnect in 30 seconds"...it never reconnected on its own. i finally decided to reinstall some drivers and it works fine now....at least the wireless connection.
The reason i am finally done putting up with this thing is because a few weeks ago i was trying to print a report from my mac onto this printer and a few things went wrong:
-the paper's lower margin was continually being cut off, and until i read the reviews (which i should've done before buying) is something i wasn't aware of. it is something HP, and only HP has a problem with. it will not let you print anything with a margin shorter than nearly a half-inch without cutting off some of it. that becomes really frustrating, especially when trying to print school reports that require a very low margin.
-(this is THE reason i am done with it.) after printing a few more reports (and just resigning to the fact that the bottom will be cut off) the printer told me there was a paper jam, or it was out of paper. i checked the paper tray and it still had paper. so i took the duplexer off to see where the paper was jammed, and lo and behold, there was no paper jam. i pushed the button to resume printing, the printer made some really weird noises, and the printer gave the same error, only this time it was only saying there was no paper. so i went on hp's website for support. it told me to clean the rollers with a damp rag...so i did, still nothing. i downloaded new drivers again and that did nothing. from what ive heard, HP's phone support is no help so i didnt even waste my time. ive tried everything on the website and it still doesnt work even though i have good paper in the tray, still have ink in the cartridges and no jams...it just will not print...it won't even pick up any paper.
There were some pros to this printer:
-when wireless worked, it worked well and did the job
-print quality was average, nothing to write home about, at least when it would print
-print speed was pretty good, when printing wirelessly i could print my document from down the hall, and set my computer down and save the document, by the time i got to the printer, the document was usually just finishing or sitting on the tray completely done.
Other than the major problems i had with the printer as stated above, there were a few other cons:
-extremely loud...the first time i printed wirelessly, i was in another room, and i heard something down the hall and thought someone was breaking into my house through my window....ya, thats how loud it was
-looks like it's hurting itself when it prints, shakes vigorously, probably goes hand-in-hand with the noise.
-it is a huge printer, from front of paper tray to back of attached duplexer, it measures about 19 inches (with the paper tray collapsed). side to side is about 19 inches also. that wouldnt be a big deal if you could put things next to or on top of it. since it shakes so badly, anything will be knocked down.
i am a college student and cant afford to keep throwing my money down on brand new printers just because HP has poor quality control. i will definitely go with another brand, even if that means spending slightly more on ink every once in a while. at least i won't be feeding money into HP's belly. thank God for the free-market economy.
all that to say, this printer has given me nothing but headaches, and i can say the same about the last one i had. when there is something that needs to be printed for the next day, you do not want to rely on HP.
P.S. -i got my first report printed using my fiance's printer at her house (ironically, she has the same printer as my old one, maybe i got a lemon), and my second using my dad's canon (which worked beautifully).
Decent printer, but nightmarish customer service July 15, 2010 Syc (M) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I selected this printer for its price, since it was eligible for the HP Trade-and-Save program, which gives a $50 rebate towards certain models of HP printers (purchased through Amazon.com, not the Amazon marketplace), given that you recycle any old printer through HP. This brought my purchase price of $89.99 down to $39.99. The price of this printer may have changed after my purchase.
PROS
[+] Fast print speed
[+] Good print quality
[+] Includes duplexer, which allows for double-sided printing
[+] Energy-efficient sleep mode
NEUTRAL
[*] Visually appealing color scheme
[*] Includes starter printheads and cartridges, as expected
CONS
[-] Nightmarish customer service
[-] Printheads are prone to malfunction
[-] Exceptionally noisy, and causes the bookshelf it's placed upon to shake
[-] Extremely expensive replacement supplies (printheads and cartridges)
[-] Horribly cryptic interface
The printer is a decent product. It takes up more room than I expected, especially with the duplexer sticking out from the back. The printer is powered by a moderately long cord that connects to a large power supply, which is in turn connected to a ridiculously short (1 foot) power cord that goes into the socket.
Set-up was simple, and after you install the 4 cartridges and the 2 printheads, the printer goes into a frenzy of noise for about 20 minutes, rattling the bookshelf it's placed upon. Driver installation was tolerable, but I needed to download drivers online from HP's support website, since the included CD did not support Windows 7. I had to choose advanced options in the installation (which involves clicking on a link in the installer) to prevent HP from installing a bunch of crap on my computers, but after that, things worked smoothly. Keep in mind that in order to connect the printer to a wireless network, you need to first connect it through USB to a computer with access to the network. This was annoying, as I had to drag my printer from the room with the Ethernet-connected computer that it's normally in to link it with the wireless-connected computer in another room.
Printing through Ethernet was quite quick once it got started. There's typically less than a half-minute delay when the printer goes into its obnoxious noise tantrum (when recovering from its sleep mode) until the printer spits out pages rapidly. Wireless printing was more irritating, as it takes the printer two minutes to connect to the wireless network from sleep mode, when it then proceeds with its noise-making and printing. Print quality was pretty nice, and there are options on the computer to customize ink volume and ink quality of your prints.
All was fine until about two months later, when the printer suddenly stopped working. Since the printer has no LCD display, it could not tell me what the problem was. My only sign was that all of the printer's indicator lights, except for the wireless signal light, were flashing rapidly. I looked online to try to find out what it meant, but neither the manual nor any of the online troubleshooting guides on the HP support website mentioned this pattern of flashing lights. The closest thing to this was that the manual mentioned that if all of the lights are flashing, I should ask for support. Considering that the printer came with a 1-year warranty, I decided to use HP's customer support options.
First, I went to online chat support, since I figured this was the simple option. After one and a half hours of following troubleshooting instructions and waiting for the support agent to respond, the agent concluded that the cartridges of the printer were at fault and that he would send replacements right away to my address, which would arrive within 2 weeks. I thanked him.
Two months later, no ink cartridges showed up. I tried contacting HP customer service over the phone, and through another half-hour of talking, an agent said that he found an entry for my previous online support chat, but could not verify what was said during the chat. Judging from the printer's flashing lights, he asked me to buy new cartridges and printheads for the printer and insisted that the warranty did not cover cartridges or printheads, despite that they were crucial for the printer to function and were included with the printer during my purchase. I thanked him, but did not listen his suggestion, since replacing all cartridges and printheads would cost $205.94, versus the printer's price of $39.99 after rebate.
I immediately re-called HP customer service to reach an agent who was more eager to help me resolve my problem. After another hour of verifying, waiting, and troubleshooting, the agent said that he ordered a refurbished replacement printer for me. Troubleshooting involved pulling and re-inserting plugs, and pressing combinations of keys a certain number of times. The complexity and lack of obviousness of some of the combinations (e.g. press "Reset" 13 times) illustrated how difficult the printer is to maintain. The replacement packaged was shipped to me in a week through FedEx Ground, and did not include cartridges, printheads, a paper tray cover, or a duplexer. I was instructed to return the old printer (without cartridges, printheads, the paper tray cover, or the duplexer) in the box, and a prepaid shipping label was supplied to cover return shipping. I had to give my credit card number, since they told me that they would charge me collateral if I did not return the old printer within 10 days of the replacement printer's arrival. I thanked the agent and waited a week.
This did not resolve the problem, as the flashing lights returned. However, I found out that the lights only flashed when both printheads were in the printer, and the printer did not flash anything when only one was installed. Despite this, the printer would also refuse to print without both printheads, even when I requested a black-and-white print with the black and yellow printhead installed.
I called HP customer service for the third time, and after yet another one and a half hours, the agent ordered another refurbished replacement printer, despite the fact that I insisted that the printheads were the problem, not the printer itself. She said that this was standard policy, and I could request printhead replacements if this did not work. I gave my credit card number for collateral purposes again, and was told to follow the return procedure again. I thanked her and patiently waited for the shipment to arrive.
A week later, the second replacement printer arrived and the flashing lights problem returned. I called customer service again to hear an agent respond with surprise when I explained to him my adventures with HP support. After a half-hour of waiting, presumably because the agent was busy talking to his supervisor, he told me that he ordered another refurbished replacement printer, this time shipped through FedEx Next Day Air. He also shipped replacement printheads through FedEx Ground, which arrived after the printer. I did the collateral procedure again, and was told to return the present replacement with the malfunctioning printheads. I thanked him greatly, and waited several days for everything to arrive.
Finally, the printer operated correctly.
A month later, I was threatened with a collateral notice that would charge me the full price of the printer if I would not return one of the printers, despite the fact that I already returned all three printers I was told to return. I called HP support again for the fifth and final time, confirmed tracking numbers on the return FedEx shipments, and the agent corrected the issue, but only after soliciting me with their extended warranty. I politely refused and thanked him.
The HP Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless is a pretty solid printer for its price, but I would caution buyers of the potential issues you may encounter with HP customer support.
